JOHN CHRUMA (guitar) — John was invited to Gateway City Big Band rehearsals with the intention of being a
substitute bass player. In 2003,
after learning John also played guitar, bass player Mike Bruce invited him
to play in the band full time.
John’s father, who subs in Gateway, started teaching him guitar when he was
ten years old. Always having a
passion for Big Band music, John played in Jazz Ensembles throughout junior
high, high school at Francis Howell, Truman State and the University of
Central Missouri. John has also
performed with Tony Viviano, the Sentimental Journey Big Band, the St.
Charles Municipal Concert Band, St. Charles Municipal Big Band and in
numerous area musical productions. His greatest influence is Count Basie
guitarist Freddie Green.
John’s family is musical as well.
His wife Colleen is a saxophonist and also graduated from Truman
State with a degree in Music Education. They both play weekly with the St.
Charles bands and enjoy spending time with daughters Abbie and Amelia.
