JOHN CHRUMA (guitar) — John was invited to Gateway City Big Band rehearsals with the intention of being a substitute bass player.  In 2003, after learning John also played guitar, bass player Mike Bruce invited him to play in the band full time.

John’s father, who subs in
Gateway, started teaching him guitar when he was ten years old.  Always having a passion for Big Band music, John played in Jazz Ensembles throughout junior high, high school at Francis Howell, Truman State and the University of Central Missouri.  John has also performed with Tony Viviano, the Sentimental Journey Big Band, the St. Charles Municipal Concert Band, St. Charles Municipal Big Band and in numerous area musical productions. His greatest influence is Count Basie guitarist Freddie Green.

John’s family is musical as well.  His wife Colleen is a saxophonist and also graduated from Truman State with a degree in Music Education. They both play weekly with the St. Charles bands and enjoy spending time with daughters Abbie and Amelia.
